Accessible Articulate Storyline 360 Courses for a Corporate Training Provider

A US-based corporate training provider needed its Articulate Storyline 360 compliance courses to work for learners using screen readers, keyboards and captions. D2i Technology audited and remediated the course library to WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508.

The Problem

The provider's Storyline 360 courses looked polished, but learners who relied on assistive technology could not complete them. Enterprise clients had started asking for accessibility conformance documentation before renewing contracts, and the team did not have the in-house expertise to fix the courses or prove they were accessible.

  • Screen readers announced slide content in a jumbled order, mixing buttons, images and text
  • Drag-and-drop knowledge checks could not be completed without a mouse
  • Focus was lost or reset when layers opened, so keyboard users could not find new content
  • Narrated videos had no captions and slides auto-advanced before learners finished reading
  • Decorative images, low-contrast text and unlabeled buttons cluttered the learner experience
  • No accessibility conformance report to share with enterprise buyers

The Solution

D2i Technology combined a manual accessibility audit with hands-on remediation inside Storyline 360, then retested every course with assistive technology before it was republished to the client's LMS.

  • Audited each course against WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 with NVDA, JAWS and keyboard-only testing
  • Rebuilt the Focus Order on every slide so screen readers follow the visual and logical flow
  • Added Set Focus triggers so keyboard and screen reader users land on new layers and feedback
  • Replaced or supplemented drag-and-drop interactions with keyboard-accessible alternatives
  • Added closed captions and transcripts, and gave learners control over slide timing
  • Wrote meaningful alt text, hid decorative objects, fixed contrast and labeled every button

The Results

WCAG 2.1 AA
Target conformance level for every course
508
Section 508 requirements built into testing
NVDA + JAWS
Screen readers used for manual retesting
Keyboard
Accessible alternative for every drag-and-drop
Detailed Success Story

From Mouse-Only Modules to Courses Every Learner Can Complete

The provider builds compliance and onboarding courses in Articulate Storyline 360 and publishes them to clients’ learning management systems. The courses relied on drag-and-drop activities, timed slides and layered feedback, which worked well with a mouse but left screen reader and keyboard users stuck. As enterprise buyers began asking for accessibility documentation, the gap became a commercial risk as well as an inclusion problem.

D2i Technology audited each course manually, then remediated it directly in Storyline 360: rebuilt focus order, Set Focus triggers on layers, keyboard-accessible knowledge checks, captions, transcripts and learner-controlled timing. Every course was retested with NVDA, JAWS and a keyboard before republishing, and the team received accessible templates so new courses start out compliant.

Before & After

Knowledge checks: was Mouse-only drag and drop, improved to Keyboard accessible
Screen reader flow: was Jumbled reading order, improved to Logical focus order
