Accessible eLearning That Meets Section 508 and WCAG 2.2

Courses, LMS platforms and training content that every learner can use, including people who rely on screen readers, keyboards, captions or voice control. We combine eLearning engineering with in-house accessibility testing, remediation and VPAT documentation.

  • 17+ Years of engineering experience
  • WCAG 2.2 AA Accessible by design
  • Section 508 Federal ICT standards
  • ISO 27001 Certified information security
  • India + USA Global delivery

Where eLearning Accessibility Breaks Down

A SCORM package can pass every LMS import check and still be unusable for a learner with a disability. These are the gaps we find most often.

Keyboard traps and mouse-only interactions

Drag-and-drop exercises, hotspots and custom players that cannot be operated without a mouse lock out keyboard and switch users.

Video without captions or transcripts

Lecture recordings and demos with no captions, transcripts or audio description exclude deaf, hard-of-hearing and blind learners.

Timed quizzes with no accommodations

Hard time limits and auto-advancing slides leave learners who need more time unable to finish or pass.

Content that screen readers cannot parse

Missing headings, unlabelled form fields, images without alt text and focus that jumps unpredictably make courses unreadable aloud.

Inaccessible PDFs and slide decks

Untagged PDFs and exported slides are the most common source of audit findings in course libraries.

No documentation for procurement

Federal and higher-ed buyers expect a current VPAT or ACR. Without one, deals stall at the security and compliance review.

Not sure how accessible your courses are today?

Start With a WCAG Audit

What Section 508 Means for eLearning

The 2017 Section 508 Refresh incorporates WCAG 2.0 Level AA by reference. Training content, LMS software and the documents around them all count as information and communication technology (ICT).

Federal agencies

Agencies must make the training they build, buy or host accessible to employees and the public.

Vendors and contractors

If you sell an LMS, courseware or training services to the government, buyers will ask for conformance evidence, typically a VPAT.

Universities and states

Many colleges and state and local bodies adopt Section 508 or WCAG as policy or through related laws such as Section 504 and the ADA.

What We Check in an eLearning Course

Each content type has its own failure points. Here is how we map them to WCAG success criteria.

eLearning content types, what we check and the related WCAG success criteria
Content type What we check WCAG reference
Video and audio Captions, transcripts, audio description and accessible player controls. 1.2.1 to 1.2.5, 1.4.2
Quizzes and assessments Labels, error identification, focus order and time-limit controls. 2.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 4.1.2
Interactive activities Keyboard operation and non-drag alternatives for drag-and-drop. 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.5.7
Slides and page layouts Heading structure, reading order, alt text and color contrast. 1.1.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.3
Navigation and players Visible focus, consistent navigation, skip links and responsive reflow. 2.4.1, 2.4.7, 1.4.10
PDFs and documents Tagged structure, reading order, table headers and form fields. 1.3.1, 2.4.2, 4.1.2

We test against WCAG 2.2 AA, which is a superset of the WCAG 2.0 AA level that Section 508 references. See how a WCAG audit works.
