Free Online Developer Tools: 15 Essential Utilities Developers Use Every Day
Free online developer tools are the small helpers most of us open a dozen times a day without thinking about it. You paste a messy API response to make it readable, decode a JWT to see why a login is failing, or convert a Unix timestamp from a log file into a date you can actually understand. None of these jobs are hard, but doing them by hand is slow and easy to get wrong.
That is why we built a set of free online developer tools of our own: D2i DevTools, a collection of around 200 utilities for encoding, hashing, JSON, text, networking, dates and images. Our engineers at D2i Technology use these tools on client projects every week, and the list below covers the 15 that developers reach for most often. For each of these free online developer tools, we explain what it does, when it helps and what to watch out for.
Why Developers Rely on Free Online Developer Tools
You could write a quick script for almost any task on this list. Most developers have, at some point. The trouble is that the script lives on one laptop, needs the right runtime installed, and gets forgotten until the next time you need it.
A good set of free online developer tools solves that. They open in any browser, work the same on every machine, and need no setup. That makes them handy for quick debugging, for pairing with a teammate, and for testers or project managers who do not have a full development environment.
On D2i DevTools, inputs are kept in memory only for the request and are not saved. Even so, a sensible rule applies to any online tool: do not paste production passwords, private keys or real customer data. Use test values, or mask anything sensitive first.
15 Free Online Developer Tools Developers Use Every Day
1. JSON Pretty, Minify and Validate
JSON tools are the most popular free online developer tools for a reason. JSON is everywhere, and it is rarely readable when you first see it. An API response often comes back as one long line, and a missing comma in a config file can break a whole deployment.
The JSON Pretty tool formats that single line into an indented structure you can scan in seconds. JSON Validate points to syntax errors, and JSON Minify strips the whitespace back out when you need a compact payload. If you compare responses often, Sort JSON Keys makes two objects much easier to line up.
2. JWT Decode
When a user is logged out unexpectedly or gets a 401 error, the token is usually the first place to look. The JWT Decode tool splits a token into its header and payload so you can check the expiry time, issuer, audience and roles.
One thing to keep in mind: decoding is not verifying. Anyone can read a JWT payload, because it is only Base64URL encoded. The signature is what proves it has not been tampered with, and that check belongs in your server code. The JWT specification (RFC 7519) is worth a skim if you work with tokens regularly.
3. Base64 Encode and Decode
Base64 shows up in email attachments, data URLs, Basic Auth headers and plenty of API fields. The Base64 Encode and Base64 Decode tools handle standard Base64, while the Encoding category also includes URL-safe Base64, Base32 and hex.
Remember that Base64 is encoding, not encryption. It hides nothing from anyone who wants to read it.
4. URL Encode and Decode
A search query with spaces, an ampersand or non-English characters can quietly break a link. URL Encode converts those characters into safe percent-encoded values, and URL Decode turns them back. The related URL Parser and Query String to JSON tools are useful when you need to pull apart a long tracking link and see exactly which parameters it carries.
5. Regex Test and Regex Replace
Regular expressions are powerful and famously easy to get wrong, which is why regex testers are among the most bookmarked free online developer tools. The Regex Test tool lets you try a pattern against sample text before it goes into your code. Regex Replace, in the Text category, applies a find-and-replace across a whole block of text, which is great for cleaning up log output or reshaping a CSV column.
6. UUID v4 and UUID v7 Generators
Need a unique ID for a test record or a database seed? UUID v4 gives you a random identifier. UUID v7 is time-ordered, which makes it a better fit for database primary keys because new rows sort naturally. The newer UUID standard (RFC 9562) explains the difference in detail. ULID is also available if your team prefers it.
7. Unix Timestamp Converters
Logs, databases and APIs love Unix time. People do not. Unix Timestamp Now shows the current value, and Unix to RFC3339 turns a timestamp into a readable UTC date. The Date and Time category adds millisecond conversions, timezone conversion and a date difference calculator.
A common bug these tools catch: a JavaScript timestamp in milliseconds being treated as seconds, which suddenly puts your dates thousands of years in the future.
8. Cron Expression Builder and Explainer
Most developers can read 0 9 * * 1 with a bit of effort. Writing “every weekday at 2:30 AM” from memory is another matter. The Cron Expression Builder creates the expression from simple schedule settings, and the Cron Explainer describes an existing one in plain English and lists the next run times. That second part is the real safety check before a scheduled job goes live.
9. Text Diff
Two config files look the same, but one works and one does not. Text Diff compares them line by line and highlights exactly what changed. It is just as useful for comparing API responses between staging and production.
10. YAML, CSV and XML Converters
Data rarely arrives in the format you need. The Formatters category covers the common conversions: YAML to JSON and back, CSV to JSON and back, XML to JSON, and .env files to JSON. If you have ever had to turn a spreadsheet export into seed data for an API, the CSV to JSON tool will save you real time.
11. JSON to TypeScript, Go and Python
Writing types by hand for a large API response is tedious. JSON to TypeScript generates a type from a sample response. JSON to Go and JSON to Python do the same for Go structs and Python dataclasses. Treat the output as a strong first draft: check optional fields and nullable values before you commit it.
12. SQL Formatter
A long query copied from an ORM log is almost impossible to read on one line. The SQL Formatter puts each clause on its own line so you can spot a missing join or a misplaced WHERE condition. JSON to SQL INSERT is a handy companion when you need to load test data quickly.
13. Docker Compose and Dockerfile Builders
Setting up a local environment often starts with a blank docker-compose.yml. The Docker Compose Builder and Dockerfile Builder give you a clean starting point, and Compose to docker run converts an existing compose file into individual commands when you need them for a script or a quick test.
14. WebSocket Tester
Real-time features such as chat, notifications and live dashboards are hard to debug without a client. The WebSocket Tester connects to an endpoint, sends messages and shows a live log of what comes back. It is a quick way to confirm whether a problem is on the server or in your front-end code.
15. Contrast Check and Color Converter
Accessibility is part of good development, not an extra step at the end. Contrast Check calculates the WCAG contrast ratio between two colors, and Color Converter switches between hex, RGB and HSL. For a more visual check, our Color Contrast Analyzer on the main site shows how text will look against its background.
A Quick Example: Debugging a Failed API Call
Here is how several free online developer tools work together on a real problem. A tester reports that a mobile app shows “Session expired” right after login. The developer copies the API response and runs it through JSON Pretty. The response includes a token, so it goes into JWT Decode. The exp claim looks odd, so they check it with Unix to RFC3339 and find the expiry was set in milliseconds instead of seconds. That is a five-minute fix instead of an afternoon of guessing.

How to Use Free Online Developer Tools Safely
A few habits keep free online developer tools useful without creating risk:
- Use test data or masked values instead of real customer information.
- Never paste production secrets, API keys or private keys into any web tool.
- Treat generated code, such as TypeScript types or Dockerfiles, as a draft and review it.
- Remember that tools help you inspect and convert; they do not replace proper tests.
That last point matters. Free online developer tools are great for finding a problem, but catching it before users do takes real testing. Our automation testing and manual testing teams build that safety net into projects from the start.
